Learn about our corrosion testing

Corrosion testing evaluates the resistance of materials to corrosive environments. This testing is crucial for materials used in severe conditions, such as in marine or industrial environments. We provide accurate results to help in selecting resistant materials and improving their performance.

The newly built and modern corrosion testing department of the SMT Materials Testing Laboratory is equipped with state-of-the-art instrumentation and all safety systems. Various tests are conducted in it according to corrosion modes of metal alloys. In particular, the following are carried out:

  • Corrosion tests with determination of INTERGRANULAR SUSTAINABILITY according to ASTM G28 method A and ASTM A262 method B, method C, method E.
  • Corrosion resistance tests(PITTING and CREVICE) according to ASTM G48 method A, method B.
  • Corrosion tests in H2S environment. These tests are used to simulate the high concentrations of hydrogen sulfide present in the aqueous phase in oil and gas refining plants, which is a major cause of embrittlement and cracking of materials.

The laboratory handles these particular tests in a highly controlled environment. The tests conducted are: H.I.C. (Hydrogen Induced Cracking) according to NACE TM0284, and S.S.C. (Sulphide Stress Corrosion) according to NACE TM0177 and according to NACE TM0316.

Corrosion tests

Intermetallic phases

The determination of detrimental intermetallic phases for duplex and superduplex steels is critical to ensure the optimal performance of these materials in corrosive environments.

Corrosion tests

Corrosion pitting test

Pitting tests are essential to evaluate the corrosion resistance of stainless steels and Nickel and Chromium based alloys.

Corrosion tests

Crevice corrosion test

Crevice tests are essential for testing the corrosion resistance of stainless steels and Nickel and Chrome based alloys.

Corrosion tests

Intergranular corrosion test

Intergranular corrosion is a phenomenon that occurs at the edges of the grains that make up metallic materials, due to the formation of precipitates or damaging phases during various manufacturing steps, particularly during heat treatments.

Corrosion tests

Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (C.S.C.C.) corrosion test.

Chloride stress corrosion, known as Chloride Stress Corrosion Cracking (C.S.C.C.), is a phenomenon that mainly affects stainless steels and other corrosion-resistant materials.

Corrosion tests

Hydrogen Induced Cracking (HIC) Corrosion Test.

The HIC test involves examining several samples taken from pipes (base metal or welded area) or sheets by immersing them for a specified time (typically 96 hours) in two saturated solutions of hydrogen sulfide.

Corrosion tests

S.S.C. (Sulphide Stress Corrosion) Corrosion.

Our SSC Test measures stress corrosion cracking in solutions with hydrogen sulfide (H2S).
