What is the C.T.O.D. Test?

In the elasto-plastic field, the C.T.O.D. (Crack Tip Opening Displacement) test is designed to calculate the displacement at the tip of a crack before it propagates under the effect of the stress state applied to the specimen.

The crack is first introduced mechanically into the specimen (by fatigue pre-cracking), and the test measures how much the crack tip opens as load is applied. This opening displacement is a direct measure of the material's ability to deform plastically and resist fracture initiation — a critical parameter in damage-tolerant design.

CTOD is particularly relevant for materials that exhibit significant plasticity at the crack tip and cannot be fully characterised by linear-elastic fracture mechanics parameters (KIC). It is also the preferred method for evaluating the fracture toughness of welds and heat-affected zones (HAZ).

Key Parameters & Concepts

δ (delta) — Crack Tip Opening Displacement [mm]
  • Measured at the original crack tip position
  • Derived from clip gauge displacement at the crack mouth (CMOD)
  • Applicable in the elasto-plastic regime — where significant plasticity occurs
  • Critical value δc indicates the onset of unstable fracture
  • δu denotes the value at the maximum load before ductile tearing
  • R-curve (CTOD-R) characterises stable crack growth resistance
  • Applicable to base metals, welds, and HAZ material

Applicable Standards

All CTOD tests at SMT are performed in full conformance with the applicable international standards. The choice of standard depends on the material, the geometry, and the specific project or regulatory requirements.

CTOD is a mandatory or highly recommended test in several safety-critical industries where fracture of metallic components could have catastrophic consequences.

⚙️

Oil & Gas & Offshore

Pipeline girth welds, riser systems, and subsea structures require CTOD qualification to verify structural integrity at low operating temperatures.

⚓

Structural Steel & Bridges

High-strength structural steels and their welds are evaluated for ductile fracture resistance to ensure safety under dynamic and fatigue loading conditions.

🔩

Pressure Vessels & Boilers

CTOD data supports fitness-for-service assessments to evaluate the acceptability of known defects in pressure equipment and piping systems.

CTOD Testing: Common Questions

Everything you need to know about CTOD fracture toughness testing, applicable standards, specimen requirements and our accredited service.

A CTOD (Crack Tip Opening Displacement) test is an elasto-plastic fracture mechanics test that measures the displacement at the tip of a pre-cracked specimen as load is applied. It quantifies a material's resistance to fracture initiation, expressed as the parameter δ (delta) in millimetres.

It is used when significant plasticity occurs at the crack tip, making linear-elastic parameters such as KIC alone insufficient to characterise the material's behaviour.

CTOD stands for Crack Tip Opening Displacement. It describes the physical opening that occurs at the tip of a crack in a loaded specimen. This displacement is used as a measure of the material's fracture toughness in the elasto-plastic regime and is one of the most important parameters in damage-tolerant engineering design.

KIC is a linear-elastic fracture mechanics parameter valid only when the plastic zone at the crack tip is small relative to specimen dimensions (plane strain condition). It applies to high-strength, lower-toughness materials.

CTOD (δ) is an elasto-plastic parameter used when significant plasticity occurs at the crack tip — applicable to tougher or thicker materials, structural steels, and weldments where KIC validity conditions cannot be met.

Both are elasto-plastic fracture mechanics parameters. The J-integral represents the energy release rate associated with crack advance. CTOD (δ) measures the physical crack tip displacement. They are related through the equation J = m · σf · δ (where m is a constraint factor and σf is the flow stress).

In practice, both J and CTOD are determined simultaneously in the same test, and both are covered by ASTM E1820 and ISO 12135.

The main international standards covering CTOD testing are:

  • ASTM E1820 — American standard, unified fracture toughness method (K, J, CTOD)
  • ISO 12135 — International standard for quasistatic fracture toughness of metallic materials
  • UNI EN ISO 15653 — Specifically developed for welded joints and heat-affected zones (HAZ)
  • BS 7448-1 — British standard, widely specified in oil & gas and offshore qualification programs

All four standards are included in SMT's ACCREDIA accreditation scope.

Yes. SMT performs CTOD testing on welded joints and heat-affected zones (HAZ) in accordance with UNI EN ISO 15653, the standard specifically developed for this purpose. Precise notch placement within the weld metal or HAZ is critical and is managed through careful specimen preparation in SMT's in-house machining workshop.

SMT tests two standard geometries, both fatigue pre-cracked before testing:

  • SE(B) – Single Edge Bend specimen, three-point loading, width W up to 140 mm
  • C(T) – Compact Tension specimen, pin-loaded, W = 25.4 / 50.8 / 76.2 / 101.6 mm

Specimens can be supplied by the client already machined, or machined from raw material in SMT's workshop.

SMT's accredited CTOD testing covers temperatures from −80°C to +75°C. Sub-zero testing is performed using a climate chamber that surrounds and conditions the specimen during the test. This range covers the requirements of offshore, arctic pipeline, structural steel and pressure vessel qualification programs.
