FRACTURE MECHANICS TESTS

Fracture mechanics test analyzes the behavior of materials in the presence of defects. This testing is critical to preventing catastrophic failures in critical structures and components. We offer detailed analyses to understand the fracture toughness of materials and improve their reliability.

The SMT Materials Testing Laboratory conducts fracture mechanics tests with load capacities up to 250 kN on both SE(B) and (C(T) geometry specimens.
All tests are conducted at controlled temperature from -100 °C to +100 °C; for crack propagation rate (dA/dN) tests, the test temperature can vary from -140 °C to +200 °C.

METHODS IN DETAIL

E

C.T.O.D. test.

In the elasto-plastic field, the C.T.O.D. (Crack Tip Open Displacement) test is intended to calculate the radius of the crack apex before the crack, mechanically generated within the specimen, propagates due to the stress state.

E

KIC trial

In the linear elastic field, the test for determining fracture toughness in the plane strain state aims to calculate that value of stress intensification factor “K” reached at which a crack present in the material propagates unsteadily, generating a crash fracture.

E

Trial JIC

The J integral, in the elasto-plastic field, represents the energy release due to crack propagation. This energy approach of fracture mechanics is a tool to uniquely characterize the behavior of a ductile material in the presence of defects and thus allows a criterion of stability to propagation to be defined.

E

Test for determination of crack propagation speed (dA/dN)

The crack propagation rate determination test is the tool for being able to calculate the rate at which a crack advances, understood as a linear length per cycle, at a fixed stress state (ΔK).
The result of the test, conducted in accordance with ASTM E647, is to determine the threshold stress state (ΔKth), below which the crack advance rate can be negligible, and the coefficients “C” and “m” that characterize Paris’s law.
