Impact Test

The impact test evaluates a material’s ability to absorb energy during an impact by measuring the material’s toughness.
This test is critical for industries that require impact-resistant materials, such as Nuclear, Oil & Gas, Automotive and Aerospace.

The SMT Materials Testing Laboratory can perform impact testing at both high temperature (up to 200 °C) and low temperature (down to -196 °C).
Reports with transition curves and FATT determination are also prepared.

Our advanced equipment guarantees accurate results. The SMT Materials Testing Laboratory has a fleet of impact testing equipment consisting of 1 450 J Charpy pendulum, 1 500 J Charpy pendulum, and 1 750 J Charpy pendulum.
It also has thermostatic baths in a liquid environment and a cryogenic cell that allow it to handle temperature-controlled tests down to -140 °C. Tests at -196 °C are acclimated through a dewar with liquid nitrogen.

// questions and answers

clear up your doubts

When you have to perform a lot of tests, perhaps during a test attended by inspection bodies, is it always the operator who transcribes the test data?

Our software sends a file to our management system, so we can be even faster and eliminate various transcription errors.

How many trials can you perform in a day?

We can perform about 300÷350 impact tests, we have 2 ASTM and one ISO pendulums, three thermostatic baths and a cryogenic support cell.

What standards do you follow for impact testing?

Impact Tests are performed according to ASTM and ISO international standards.

What materials can you test for impact testing?

We can test nickel alloys, cobalt alloys, aluminum alloys, Duplex, low alloy steels, stainless steels, additive manufacturing.
