Micrographic examinations

Micrographic examinations allowdetailed analysis of the microstructure of materials through the use of microscopes. More specifically, the type, morphology, quantity, size and distribution of the phases and constituents present in a given material are evaluated. All these characteristics influence the mechanical behavior and corrosion resistance of the material itself.
In addition to pure microstructural analysis, these examinations are also used for the following tests:
  • Determination of the content of nonmetallic inclusions
  • Determination of the average crystalline grain size
  • Determination of decarburization depth
  • Determination of thickness and microstructure of surface coatings (coatings)
  • Determination of hardening depth of surface heat treatments such as surface hardening, nitriding, carburizing, carbonitriding

In essence, it is the fascinating world of the infinitely small. With appropriate preparations, mirror-polished specimen surfaces are obtained and, with subsequent chemical or electrochemical attacks, their structure can be observed using optical microscopes that allow viewing up to 1,500 magnifications.
Sometimes, however, it is necessary to go further. For this reason, the SMT materials testing laboratory has equipped itself with a scanning electron microscope (SEM) that allows for up to 150,000 magnifications.
The scanning electron microscope is also equipped with an EDS probe to carry out point semi qualitative analysis of the observed sample (microanalysis).

// questions and answers

resolve your doubts

What is the difference between a macrographic and a micrographic examination?

Macrographic examination observes features visible to the naked eye or at low magnification, while micrographic examination analyzes the microstructure of materials at much higher levels of magnification.

Can you make micrographic measurements of surface layers and coatings?

Yes, we can make detailed measurements and analyses in the surface area of samples (so-called “near surface” analyses). Such analyses can be for example: thickness of surface coatings and hardened layers such as nitrided, cemented and induction hardened. We can also determine the microstructure of the same, either by light or electron microscopy.
